Are you ticked off this year?

Ticks seem to be out if full force this year making many people give up their daily walks in the woods. Wouldn’t it be great to enjoy our beautiful trail systems without worrying about ticks?  While nothing can repel every single bug, Nantucket Spider makes bug repellent that claims to repel 90% of ticks and bugs, and contains no harsh chemicals.

Nantucket Spider makes different bug and tick repellents especially for dogs, adults and even for kids.  They make the most effective, natural bug repellents that are gentle to your skin, hair, and clothes. Their patented products are made with a blend of essential oils and are not greasy.  Each bottle is topped with a fine mister so that you can get excellent coverage on your hair, clothing and skin, without getting drenched.  It smells great and is gentle on the environment.

Nantucket Spider comes in three different varieties, for people, kids and dogs:

Nantucket Spider natural, deet-free repellent for people contains a wide spectrum of essential oils, including rosemary, geranium, cedarwood, peppermint, lemongrass, clove and citronella.  Nantucket Spider is effective at repelling mosquitoes, biting flies (including horse flies, black flies, and deer flies) and ticks.

Because it is water-based, it is not greasy and has a light feeling when sprayed on skin and in hair.  It also and can be sprayed on clothing and gear without staining or damage.

All of this is great news, until you try to spray it on your child and they scream from the smell.  Although we may find the smell pleasing, kids will shy away from the citronella smell.  Nantucket Spider Summer Camp for Kids has all the same active essential oils as the adult version, except for citronella.  The summer camp formula is also available in a 2oz travel-size bottle.

Another exciting product is Nantucket Spider for Dogs, which is formulated to repel mosquitoes, biting flies, ticks and fleas. This repellent does not contain “citrusy” oils that dogs dislike, but instead it contains thyme oil to repel fleas, and a blend of other effective essential oils, including rosemary, peppermint, cedarwood, and geranium.  The cedarwood and peppermint are both known to be effective in repelling ticks.  At first spray, the formula may have a slight unpleasant odor that goes away quickly, leaving a nice cedar scent that will not annoy your dog. (which is very important.) This should NOT be used on cats as essential oils can be toxic, especially the peppermint.

We have tester bottles in the store if you would like to try a Nantucket Spider product out prior to buying.  Just ask any sales associate.

Some other helpful products in the war against ticks are lint rollers and tick keys.  It’s a great idea to use link rollers on yourself and pets before going in the house after a hike. Our Flint rollers are unique in that the sticky paper is retracted into the outside tube, making a compact and easy to carry roller that will even fit in your pocket.

Should a tick get inbedded in you or your dog, it’s important to remove the entire tick as soon as possible.  There are many home remedies, such as putting vaseline, dawn soap or burning the end of the tick to get it to release it’s bite for easy removal.  Research has shown that this is actually extremely harmful as doing any of these things may make the tick regurgitate and thus infecting the victim with harmful diseases.  For this reason, the Center for Disease Control reccomends avoiding  “folklore remedies such as “painting” the tick with nail polish or petroleum jelly, or using heat to make the tick detach from the skin. Your goal is to remove the tick as quickly as possible — not wait for it to detach.”

Although tweezers may be handy in a pinch, “tick keys” are the easiest way to fully remove a tick. The tick keys can be carried on your key ring so you will always have it available.  Tick Keys are 99.9% effective at safely removing the entire tick.

They are super easy to use.  When you see an imbedded tick, spread the hair/fur around it, and follow these three simple steps:

  • Place the large opening of The Tick Key over the tick.
  • Slide The Tick Key to the small opening.
  • Pull The Tick Key away from the skin.

The tick will be easily removed, head and all! Remember to always disinfect your tick key after each use.
