How to build a cozy fire

Cold days are coming and there’s nothing more relaxing than cozying up to a warm fire in your fireplace.  Some people are daunted by the thought of building a fire in their fireplace or fire pit, but it is actually very simple.  And the great news is we have everything in the store that you need to get started!

The first step is to make sure your damper is open.  You don’t want to ruin your day with smoke billowing throughout your house.  The damper is what controls the amount of air flowing through the flue, up and out the chimney.  You also need to make sure your chimney is cleaned regularly, to avoid chimney fires.  We carry chimney brushes and creosote logs to assist with this process.

Once the damper has been opened, you need to “preheat” the flue to make sure the draft will go up the chimney and not down into your home.  One way to insure that the draft is going up is to light a starter block or a Duraflame log and hold it up near the flue for a minute or two, to push the cold air out of your chimney.  These are easy to light and will help create an easy path for the smoke from your fire to follow upwards.

Set up your fire with newspaper or fire starter on the base, smaller kindling next in a grid pattern and then stack a couple logs on top of your kindling base.

Light the newspaper or fire starter and keep watch to make sure it doesn’t extinguish.  Soon the smaller kindling and then the larger logs will catch fire.  Once the fire is blazing, you can keep adding larger logs to the flames.

Then it is time to sit back with your favorite beverage and snacks to enjoy the show!
