Made in America? More like Made in New England! Page Hardware & Appliance Co. has devoted a section of the store to products that were created in New England. This is important to us because everyone who has ever worked for, or knows about local businesses, knows that it is hard for them to compete with the large corporations. We can help each other – local craftspeople provide products that you can’t buy in a chain store, and we provide a retail outlet to connect their creations with you. Locally sourced products also minimize the carbon footprint, with a short trip from maker to end user, and they are uniquely suited to the local consumer.
Being a small business ourselves, we know the importance of supporting your local businesses. That is why we created a section that displays products centered around the New England Area. The map below has push pins that show exactly where the products were made.
There are a few big reasons that will help explain why shopping locally is so important.
- When you buy locally, a bigger portion of the money you spend will stay in your local economy compared to money spent at large chain stores or online. In one study, researchers saw that every “$100 spent at local independents generated $45 of secondary local spending [on payroll, local supplies and services], compared to $14 for a big-box chain.” Online shopping probably generates close to $0 in local secondary spending. When we can source inventory locally, even more of your dollars stay local.
- You will have a good understanding of the people behind the product and the materials they use. Every product in our Made-In-New-England section has a story behind it.
- You will receive better customer service. Local vendors can accommodate custom orders, ship quickly, and personally respond to problems. The employees at Page Hardware are more than happy to help with any questions you may have, and can connect you with any of our Made-in-New-England makers.
